We were asked to design a required exit-stair for an existing Annex house that has been converted into four apartments. We treated the exit-stair as a completely separate structure that celebrates its difference. The stair takes on an industrial character through the use of an exposed steel frame, linear elements and translucent wall panels.
The full build-out was required to be free standing from the house with minimal disruption to the existing structure. The translucent polycarbonate walls flood the stair with natural daylight, creating a pleasant interior environment for the building tenants. The back of the house becomes a new front as tenants can now safely enter and exit through both.
