This family home is located in a semi-rural area outside of Ottawa. It features an integrated approach to sustainability and environmental performance, including a groundwater geothermal heating system and a passive solar approach to maximize sun exposure and cross ventilation.
Our concept was to balance the use of sophisticated sustainable construction systems with warm materials, and to emphasize the ‘heart’ of the home. In order to do this, the main floor spaces are laid out for flow and interconnection around the central staircase. We produced a significant feature element – an articulated sculpture made from Ontario marine grade plywood designed to show off the grain – and set it at the base of the stair.

Upstairs, the bedrooms flank this vaulted circulation space that is naturally lit from tall, north-facing windows, which allow wonderful views toward the surrounding forests.
